What's so special about Big Sid's Sanctuary?
Well, pretty much everything! Big Sid's is special because it is one of the largest shelters in the nation which caters exclusively to cats who test positive for FIV or FeLV. FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) are viruses that can, if they flare up, suppress a cat's immune system.
Unfortunately, the stigma that surrounds these viruses all too often means a death sentence for infected cats at shelters... but not at Big Sid's. While their immune systems may be more fragile than those of their uninfected counterparts, these viruses do not hinder infected cats from being some of the most adorable, fun-loving, and affectionate cats around.
"FIV and FeLV sound scary"
Once you understand a bit more about these viruses, you will see that there is nothing to fear. These viruses cannot be trasmitted to or by humans: in other words, you cannot catch them, and you cannot spread them to your own cats.
The cats at Big Sid's are no less deserving of attention, care, and love than any other cats. They are just as adoptable as the cats at Crash's Landing, and indeed many cats have been adopted from Big Sid's. All they need is a chance, and someone who cares enough to take them into their home.
